England Set to Face Sri Lanka in Women’s T20 World Cup Opener at Edgbaston

On Friday at Edgbaston, hosts England will play Sri Lanka in the first match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Currently, England has an impressive record of 10 wins and only 2 losses against Sri Lanka in T20I matches; therefore, they are expected to perform well during this game. However, over the last 2 T20I matches, Sri Lanka beat England in back-to-back games. This will mark the 4th time that both countries meet at a Women’s T20 World Cup.

England has been playing well, leading into this tournament with 4 wins out of 6 T20I match-ups so far this season. On the other hand, Sri Lanka is very confident after winning their last 5 T20I matches. Those wins were achieved against both the West Indies and Bangladesh with 2 separate series victories.

England’s captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is expected to return to the side after recovering from a calf injury and performed well in the warm-up match against India, scoring a half-century, as she is likely to feature primarily as a batter through the initial stages of the tournament.

Captain Chamari Athapaththu will be the key player for Sri Lanka as she makes her way into her 10th Women’s T20 World Cup in terrific form, including a fantastic 94-run performance vs Pakistan in their warm-up.

The English fast bowler Lauren Bell is also someone you will need to keep your eye on. Lauren had an excellent Women’s Premier League match and backed that up by taking wickets against New Zealand and India.

Sri Lanka was forced to make a squad change when 19-year-old spinner Shashini Gimhani was ruled out of the tournament with a lower-back injury, and fast bowler Chethana Vimukthi was named as her replacement.

According to weather reports leading into the match, the conditions should provide for uninterrupted play between Sri Lanka and England, with bright skies expected in Birmingham.

Chamari will lead her team into the match as they embrace their underdog status and play with reckless abandon, according to captain Natasha Sciver-Brunt, while Natasha expresses her excitement and confidence in leading her squad into the tournament.
